How to measure yourself at home and choose the right size

Most sizing problems come from guessing. A dress size on a label means different things in different countries, and even between two pieces from the same shop. Your measurements do not change from brand to brand, so they are the most reliable thing to shop by.

What you need

  • A soft fabric tape measure
  • A mirror, so you can check the tape is level
  • Fitted underwear or a thin layer, not a jumper or jeans

The three measurements

Bust

Measure around the fullest part of your bust. Keep the tape level across your back and snug, but not tight enough to press in.

Waist

Find your natural waist: the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the navel. Stand relaxed and breathe out normally before you read the number. Do not hold your stomach in.

Hips

Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips, usually about 20 cm (8 in) below your waist.

Small things that make a difference

  • Measure twice. If the two numbers differ, measure a third time.
  • Keep one finger between the tape and your body so it is not pulled too tight.
  • Write the numbers down in both centimetres and inches. You will use them again.

Choosing between two sizes

If your measurements fall across two sizes, let the garment decide. For fitted styles, go by your largest measurement. For knitwear and relaxed shapes, which are cut with extra room, most people are comfortable in the smaller of the two. When a product page gives its own measurements, always go by those first.

Once you have your numbers, compare them with our size guide. If you are still unsure, email us your measurements and the style you like and we will help you choose.
